Was it possible to be a good, even outstanding writer and still come to terms with the National Socialist regime? This question is the subject of the documentary. Based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Anatol Regnier, the documentary film gets closer to the writers Hans Fallada, Gottfried Benn, Erich Kästner, Ina Seidel and Hanns Jobst who stayed in Germany between 1933 and 1945. What attitude did they develop towards National Socialism in their writing, thinking and feelings? How do they contrast and conflict with well-known exile authors such as the Manns, Bertolt Brecht and Lion Feuchtwanger?
